How to Install VMware Tools in Kali Linux 2016.2 E17

This video tutorial shows how to install VMware Tools (Open VM Tools) in Kali Linux E17 for better performance and usability such as Auto-resize Guest Display (Fit Guest Now), Drag-Drop File and Clipboard sharing features. Although Kali Linux 2016.2 E17 can run without VMware Tools, you would lose important functionality and convenience.

What is Kali Linux?
Kali Linux is a Debian-based distribution with a collection of security and forensics tools. It features timely security updates, support for the ARM architecture, a choice of four popular desktop environments, and seamless upgrades to newer versions. Kali Linux is preinstalled with over 300 penetration-testing programs, including Armitage, nmap, Wireshark (a packet analyzer), John the Ripper, Aircrack-ng, Burp suite and OWASP ZAP. Kali Linux can run natively when installed on a computer’s hard disk, can be booted from a live CD or live USB, or it can run within a virtual machine. What is VMware Tools?
VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machine’s guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine. Without VMware Tools installed in your guest operating system, guest performance lacks important functionality. If you do not have VMware Tools installed in your virtual machine, you cannot use the shutdown or restart options. You can use only the Power options. If you want to shut down the guest operating system, shut it down from within the virtual machine console before you power off the virtual machine.

What is Open-VM-Tools?
Open VM Tools is a set of services and modules that enable several features in VMware products for better management and seamless user interactions with guests. It includes kernel modules for enhancing the performance of virtual machines running Linux.

What is Enlightenment (E17) Desktop?
Enlightenment (E17) is the next generation of graphical desktop shell from the Enlightenment project. It is a compositing and stacking window manager for the X Window System. Since version 20, Enlightenment is also a Wayland compositor. Enlightenment includes functions to provide a graphical shell, and it can be used in conjunction with programs written for GNOME or KDE. When used together with the Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (EFL), Enlightenment can refer to an entire desktop environment.
