In this video I am going over Linux Kernel 5.0 and what I am experiencing for the first week of its release.
Linux Kernel 5.0 Highlights
-AMD FreeSync
-Initial Support for Nvidia 2000 series on Open Source driver (No acceleration)
-Support for Ryzen 3rd Gen and 2nd Gen gets Temp monitoring

Holding your kernel when you find a good subversion:
sudo aptitude hold linux-image* linux-header*
Search Held packages
sudo aptitude search ~ahold

Might be worth not using Debian here. Since it's packages tend to be optimised for the kernel version it ships with…
is 4.15.0-72-generic old?
5.0 is SHIT on my dual Xeon X5365 which is not normal
>Runs slow
>Sluggish
>Small freeze every 10 seconds
>Any program, game or web browser uses 1 thread only
What a disaster, we have UKUU luckily for noobs. 4.18.0-22 is perfect
My laptop slowdown due to 5.0 …I am using deepin Linux …please help
does upgrading the kernel have any security benefits?
I tried to install kernel 5.2 and my computer hangs on reboot! What do I do with that? Pls halp ; -;
Cool !
I decided to be brave and put kernel 5.19 on my KDE Neon system, it actually works very, VERY nicely, much nicer than i would have expected given the laptop's age.
Please help, I have an old HP Compaq DC6800 sff. I went to HP support and I downloaded linux-5.1.7.tar.xz for my system. Can tell me how to install it. I have extracted it now what? Thank you, New to Ubunto
Question! I am running Linux on Manjaro with kernel 4.19.42 and it runs smoothly, should I upgrade to kernel 5.0?
I haven't had any issues with 5.0! Freesync working and other stuff work flawless as before (I'm on eOS-ubuntu 18.04). Sorry to hear about your problems, shit happens sometimes!
Been using Ubuntu Mate 19.04 now for school/personal use (that ofc comes with the linux kernel 5.0.*) on a ThinkPad T470S, thankfully never had any issues with it so far. Also nice well put together video.
I upgraded my RAM and graphics card to a RTX 2060 in order to use my 3840×1600 LG monitor. It was a mess until I installed the 5.0.3 kernel and now I am getting 75Hz at full resolution!
7:06 Search A-hole.
Nice vid! So was that xorg or Wayland with freesync? And please more screenshot b-roll 😁 (avoids shirt issues)
Hey Chris another great video ! Where can i get that system monitor widget it’s cool! Thanks !
Ubuntu 19.04 user on kernel 5.0.0-8-generic here. I didn't even notice I was on kernel 5 until I did aa uname command xD. not much major change I guess
For those who are using an AMD gpu there's a modified version with the latest AMD DAL coded in github under the user M-Bab.
In my case enabled full Vulkan support and audio output over HDMI
I've been considering trying 5.0. But 4.15 is working just fine and stable for me, so I don't think I necessarily need to upgrade
I'm on arch, rollin' right along. Been on the 5.0 kernel for a while now. Not experiencing any of the issues you described.
As a long time linux user, I've been looking into SysAdmin related content and so naturally this came up in my recommended videos. I enjoyed it very much and it was short and concise. Subbed you and I'll be looking at what other stuff you've got.
I have been running the Arch patched version on a T430 and haven't had any problems.
You know "especially" doesn't have an "x" in it…
Linux doesn't use semantic versioning, so 5.0 might have just been called 4.21 but Linus doesn't want to have very high minor versions for some reason. Instead we'll just see high major version numbers in the not too distant future.
I expect Linux may get a mini surge of users when Windows 7 support finishes January 2020. For those that missed or procrastinated during the free upgrade to windows 10. Mostly to the free Mint and Ubuntu versions no doubt. Or the free PC Chrome OS version. Unless they opt for the payed support offer for the first year of windows 7 expiry.
Have been using 5.0 for a little bit now. My WiFi keeps disconnecting, and I can't enable it until I reboot my laptop. Apart from that it seems quite stable, though.
question
how much RAM does kernel 4.20 use at startup??
I'm still using Xubuntu 16.04 on kernel 4.15 because I've gotten the thing down to ~200MB at startup, and it's performance is so fast
I did try Xubuntu 18.04 and hated it (not sure what kernel version), the lowest I could get it's RAM use was ~600MB, but despite that it's performance was slow af.
I need low RAM use because my PCs have between 2GB to 4GB of RAM and I can't afford to expand, nor can expand in some cases.
using linux-5.0.4.arch1-1 on arch it is fully stable
I tried 5.0 on my laptop, i got problem that sometimes touchpad doesnt work after boot, and then after restarting it works. I wanted it to try freesync but hack to enable it seems harder to do than windows, seems i need to make modded EDID.
WhY iS nViDiA sO cRaP oN lInUx¿ It's 2019 and Nvidia Optimus from the Stone Age STILL doesn't work… I mean fuck the opensource drivers, not even the proprietary drivers are on par with damn windows drivers…
How are you finding Deb 10, I am still using Debian 9….
Chris, how do you know that FreeSync works? On Windows there is some pendulum test and ealier there was a windmill test but other than playing games and hoping that it works because you didn't see any tears how do you get a 100% certain confirmation that FreeSync works?
i'm 5.0 on arch right now
thanks for the video. it helped understand the small buggy things in my kde arch install.
not surprised you've had issues with it. I don't like one of the fundamental changes they made.
i just don't get it, i use arch with the lasted update in my pc laptop and my ftp server and I'v never had any kind problem with lasted linux kernel.
I'm running 5.0.3 on Mint 19.1 Cinnamon and 5.0.2 on the beta Salient OS (Arch) by Silent Robot. No issues on either distro.
im sure fedora will upgrade soon
If you just upgrade the major kernel version you will still have thousands of files dependent on the old major version. Everything needs to be updated when making a huge jump like that, there's not really backwards compatibility in linux.
I really like your channel. But you need to put the grandpa shirts away, and get you some hip groovy shirts.
I am running several distros, each on their own 120 GB SSD. Several are using the 5.0 kernel with no issue. I have been trying to install Fedora Rawhide and have not yet been successful, but I was
using an unofficial build that had not past Fedora's release unofficial test.
Это же брать фастфуда казани (сейчас уже ИСТОРИИ ХАЛДЕЯ)! :DD
I'm good with kernel 4.9, 4.13, and 4.19 from antiX and MX Linux. If something ain't broke, I don't upgrade it.
The new Solus 4 ISOs came out with kernel 4.20.16 and mesa 19.0… guess they knew what they were doing lol.
5.1 RC1 now
